Theadverse impacts of unsatisfactory quality of life in general in the CBD inspirenot only upon the public at large but also by all those who are directlyengaged in wholesale trade viz., the traders, labourers, transportoperators, the authorities in charge of traffic regulation, city maintenance and conservancy etc.,Recognising the close linkages with the trade, movement of goods and economiclife of the city relatively painless solutions have been worked out fordecongestion of the city by Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority(CMDA). As a possible solution to theabove said problems of Central Business District (CBD), CMDA has planned forestablishment of new Wholesale Market Complexes and new city level Bus andTruck Terminals at sites which are well clear of congested areas and alsowithout being much far away from the City. The Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex (KWMC) is one such project evolvedto decongest the CBD. The KWMC spreadsover an area of 295 acres. It abutsPoonamalee High Road and Nesapakkam Road and can be easily accessed from allparts of City. InPhase-I, the Wholesale Market for Perishables have been developed byconstructing 3,194 shops among these 2,948 shops were allotted.
