DEVELOPMENT OF MRTS IN CHENNAI

MRTS

MRTS PHASE-I

  1. The first phase of the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) from Chennai Beach to Thirumylai for a length of 8.55 km. was taken up for implementation by Government of India (GoI) through the Ministry of Railways in 1983-84. The project was cleared by the Union Planning Commission and sanctioned by the Railway Board in 1983-84 at an estimated cost of Rs.53.46 crores. The project has since been completed at a cost of Rs.269 crores and commissioned in October 1997.
  2. The Government of Tamil Nadu (GoTN) on their part made available 19.68 hectare of Government land and 0.54 hectare of private land to Railways free of cost. The cost of the land is presently valued at Rs.60 crores. About 3500 families affected by the project were rehabilitated at a cost of about Rs.6.00 crores by the GoTN.
  3. The MRTS Phase-I project was launched by the GoI with a commitment to meet the estimated cost of the project in full, inclusive of the cost of construction, rolling stock, signal system, etc.
  4. The MRTS Phase-I is on surface for a length of 2.75 km. and elevated for a length of 5.80 km. Out of 8 stations, 5 are elevated. There are two tracks for uninterrupted operation of train service between the terminal stations. The system can cater to about 6 lakh passenger-trips per day.

The GoTN have already released Rs.483.16 crores to Metropolitan Transport Project (Railways).

MRTS PHASE-II EXTENSION

Recognising the fact that the impact of the MRTS can be felt only if the system is extended at least up to St. Thomas Mount to complete a rail loop CMDA carried out through M/s. RITES in October 1999 a detailed project report for extending the MRTS Phase II from Velachery to St. Thomas Mount at a cost of Rs. 10.00 lakhs. The project envisages development of the elevated MRTS on single pillars along the median of the Inner Ring Road (IRR) from MBI Road to St. Thomas Road for a distance of about 5 km. at a cost of Rs.495.74 crores. With the GoI agreeing to implement the project jointly with GoTN sharing the cost respectively 33% by GoTN and 67% by GoI, formal administrative sanction has since been accorded by GoTN on 14.01.2008. With GoI allocating Rs.20.00 crores and GoTN Rs.66.67 crores for the current year, the MTP (R) commenced the execution of the project by calling tenders for the foundation and sub-structure works. The project envisages construction of 2 intermediate stations viz. Puzhuthivakkam and Adambakkam RTS stations. The project has been commenced in April 2008. The sub-structure and super structure works are in progress.
